One of the most popular new restaurants in Portland and beyond is Kann. Kann opened in August 2022 and continues to be one of the most popular restaurants on the Portland scene. Behind this phenomenon is Gregory Gourdet.
Recent press and awards: Portland Month’s 2022 Restaurant of the Year, New York Times’ 50 best restaurants in America, and 2023 James Beard Award Winner.
Background

Gregory’s culinary skills have made Kann not only a local favorite but also a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts from all over. With its innovative and diverse menu, Kann offers a unique dining experience that showcases Gregory’s passion for using locally sourced ingredients in his dishes.
The restaurant’s success can be attributed to Gregory’s strong commitment to sustainable and ethical practices. He has been a vocal advocate for reducing food waste and supporting local farmers, which has resonated with both the Portland community and beyond.
Aside from his talent in the kitchen, Gregory’s magnetic personality and dedication to his craft have earned him a loyal following. He has also been recognized by prestigious culinary publications and television shows, further cementing his status as a culinary icon.
Whether it’s the exquisite flavors, the vibrant atmosphere, or the warm hospitality, Kann promises an unforgettable dining experience. With Gregory at the helm, there’s no doubt that Kann will continue to push culinary boundaries and delight food lovers for years to come.
I was fortunate enough to not only get a reservation but also be seated at the Chef’s table. Seeing the staff and Gregory in a food service was inspiring. His calm demeanor helps his staff prepare dishes while nothing goes unnoticed as he inspects and approves each dish before it is served. His kitchen line doesn’t resemble any of the Hell’s Kitchen episodes I have watched!
Dinner

My selections for the evening were King Salmon which was herb marinated and stewed peppers. Paired with Diri Ak Djon Djons (Haitian black mushroom rice and lima beans). Followed by Krèm Frez (strawberry cream, sponge cake, hibiscus, pickled rhubarb sorbet).

As expected, the food and service were exceptional and I would highly recommend Kann. Parking is at a premium in that neighborhood, so do plan ahead if you plan to drive. Uber may be a better option.
